Pit and Fissure Sealants

pit and fissure sealants
pit and fissure sealants for kids and adults

What are Pit and Fissure Sealants ?

Pit and Fissure Sealants are one of the best ways to prevent cavities.

The chewing surfaces of our teeth are not flat, they have depressions and grooves in form of pits and fissures.

We can not easily clean the food particles stuck inside these pits and fissures because brush bristles are too thick.

Pit and fissure sealants are a type of dental material which are filled into these deep grooves to fill the space so that no food can stay inside

What is the right age to get Sealants?

Dental sealants should be applied at following ages:

  • At age of 3 to 4 years of age on milk molars .
  • Around 6 to 7 years of age on First permanent molars.
  • At age of 11 to 12 years of age to premolars and second molars.

Ideally all surfaces which are pitted should be sealed such as back surfaces of permanent front teeth.

Adults can get the pit and fissure sealants done too if there are deep groves on their teeth.

How long does the sealants last?

We have seen sealants last for more than 10 years but regular checkups is necessary.

Pits and Fissure Sealants can some time come off and should be replaced immediately.
