Bad Breath

Why do I have bad breath?

Bad Breath is an embarrassing condition which can occur due to various reasons consequently leading to embarrassing social situations.

Most common reasons for Bad Breath (Halitosis) are

  • Infection in mouth such as Dental Problems
  • Dry Mouth because of some medicines or other conditions.
  • Starvation or Fasting

Starvation should be avoided as it can cause problems such as acidity .

  • Habits such as smoking, alcohol etc
  • Some Foods such as Garlic , Onion, excessive spices etc
  • Uncontrolled Diabetes can cause bad breath.
  • Gastric problems
  • Liver and Kidney disease
  • Respiratory Problems such as Asthma etc
  • Psychogenic conditions

Points for Patients

  • Brush and Floss daily. Use soft brush as not to harm gums.

Flossing is a good habit and should be done properly and gently.

  • Treat any known cause such as gastric problems.
  • Try to maintain good general health like keeping Diabetes under control.
  • Avoid food s such as onions, garlic and excessive spices because they release volatile sulphur compounds.

These compounds can cause bad breath

  • Avoid habits that worsen this condition like alcohol and tobacco thereby preventing Halitosis.

Alcohol and tobacco can lead to dryness of mouth leading to worsening of condition.

  • Take small meals at regular intervals .

Fresh fruits can be taken as a mid meal snacks. These are healthy and nutritious.

This can prevent conditions like acidity.

  • Maintain good oral hygiene like brushing twice daily with good fluoride containing paste.
  • Clean tongue before going to bed as it can lead to better breath in the morning.
  • Keep mouth as moist as possible by using sugar free chewing gums.

Use sugar free gums because this causes flow of saliva.

  • If there are Dentures , keep them clean.

If you wear dentures clean them every night and store them in clean water every night.

  • Visit your dentist at least once in six months for proper checkups
